Vicente has avoided drugs, gangs, and peer pressure. Changing his behavior and becoming a leader to his peers, Vicente has received the student of the year award! He has excelled academically and with attendance. He continues to strive for his goals of attending UCLA and graduating with a degree in Engineering.

Brenda has had to overcome some recent challenges that affected her school attendance. With the support of her mentor, Brenda’s attendance is much better, and she is understanding how her current actions affect her future. Recently, she passed a math exam that she committed to studying for. Brenda has a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a good sense of independence. These traits will help her overcome any obstacles she may face in the future.

Brian has overcome some difficult experiences by practicing regular self-reflection. He thinks often about how his actions and words are received by others. Additionally, Brian is doing well in school with both grades and behavior. He has a job and is working to pursue his dream as a music sound engineer. Brian enjoys basketball and organizes games with his peers during lunch. He is a natural leader.

Ivette is a 10th grader at Cabrillo High School. Overcoming many adversities, she has achieved many academic and personal goals. Ivette is now more involved in school activities. For example, she enrolled in intermediate dance and has performed in two dance concerts. With her mentor, she has learned better ways to effectively communicate and problem solve. In the future, she hopes to apply these skills as an attorney. Ivette is focused on attending college to achieve that dream.

Abdul is a natural leader in school and in the community. He presented before the City Council, advocating for free youth bus passes by sharing his personal story. He also successfully managed a team in his school’s Gardening Club. Having faced many adversities since a young age, Abdul finds his escape through skateboarding. He has been advocating for a skatepark in his neighborhood to ensure skaters have a safe recreational space. Since middle school, he has drastically improved his grades. Abdul actively seeks leadership and volunteer opportunities. He is independent, responsible, and a great teacher to those around him.

Justin is a freshman at Fresno High School. Over the last few months, Justin has substantially improved his grades, built positive relationships with teachers, and maintained good attendance. He has also been involved in various service projects as a community volunteer. Justin is currently job-hunting with the support of his mentor. Upon graduation, he is determined to attend a 4-year college.

Sitey has been in the mentoring program since September 2012. Since then, she has drastically improved in her academics, language development, and school engagement. Sitey is involved in many community organizations such as the International Rescue Committee and Outdoor Outreach. She recently completed an internship with the Gardening Club. Sitey is determined to attend a 4-year university, not letting personal or academic obstacles define her. She also helps at home, caring for her younger siblings, nieces, and nephews.
